A trip to Washington DC

In the beginning of 2012, I made a trip to the capital city of the United States of America, Washington DC. It was a trip that was planned long ahead and something I was looking forward to. I have read and seen so much about the place that, I had a whole list of things I wanted to see and do there. Given that my husband's business visit lasted only 3 days, I had to shorten my list of things to do.

The two most important things that contributed to my knowledge on DC are, The Lost Symbol a novel by Dan Brown and Food Network, thanks to all their shows from Top Chef to Food wars, I knew a lot many places to eat. Given the fact that I have not visited my own country's capital, Delhi, seeing Washington DC was a distant dream. So I was so excited to be there. My husband had booked us a hotel as close to the places of interest as possible. We walked to most of them that we could visit.

First things first, I saw snow, it was falling quietly outside our window painting the city white. It was simply beautiful. The place was cold, for a person from Florida, it was too cold. But I liked the change.

We walked our way to the first place on the list, White House. We walked up the road and there it was, right there! We were looking at it from the street. I was surprised to see it, I was expecting something in the center of a large area, though it was pretty large area, it still did not account for how large I imagined it to be.

The next stop from the White House was the Washington Monument. A large structure, which is an obelisk that was built to commemorate the first U.S. president, General George Washington. It was all that I expected it to look like. I had read about it in the Lost Symbol and had seen it in the news after the earthquake. Unfortunately, it was closed for visitors, so we had to see it from outside only.

Across from this monument, was the WWII memorial and Lincoln memorial. One of our friends who lived there said the WWII memorial was a very peaceful place to spend time. The Lincoln memorial left me dumbstruck. It was this huge marble structure, with huge solid marble Pillars. It was one of the largest structures I had ever seen. The largest structure list consists of : The Nandi at Nandi Hills, The Thanjore Temple, Temple at Rameswaram and The Capitol at Austin(I think most capitol buildings are huge)..there might be more to this list, but these were the first that come to my mind.

We also got a quick tour of the George Washington University. The Potomac river that runs between Washington DC and Virginia physically separates the two places, I mean if you crossed a bridge you were in Virginia, I found this interesting. Now I understand what, one of my friends meant by "I live outside DC, not in DC but in Virginia".

DC is a foodie's dream come true. One could find so many restaurants, serving so many different cuisines. The best of this was the food trucks. They appear during the day suddenly and serve tasty and affordable food. Its like food comes knocking at your office door. Yummy.

With that delicious thought, I want to complete this post as I can go on rambling about all the other places and food, but this was a quick round up of the things that interested me the most in DC.

No Mention

Was reading this old post on my reader : POST(yes I have a month long backlog in reading). It was interesting how things happening in politics are so similar irrespective of the state, language and people. People are not sensitive about small things, its only the other major forces in our society that make it an issue. Its the same with religious sentiments. These are played a lot more in our country. I have seen some problems myself where in the average person would not feel too bad about it, like the simple issue of releasing The Da Vinci Code movie in Chennai. Many groups brought about a ban on it, I was amused by this cause, if they had extreme faith, even after watching that movie they should not be moved or change. Its just a work of fiction, on the other hand they banned it and made it look like they had a fickle faith. My friends who were Christians, felt that this action of banning the film was unwanted and silly. There was this other movie Anbe Sivam, in which the hero says there is no god and plays opposite to a strong hindu theist and says a lot of stuff about god not existing blah blah, I watched that movie. I did not feel that my sentiments were hurt. Its a fiction , another person's opinion, just because I think something I can't make someone else think that way by forcing them. But that's exactly what is happening now, like that post says, someone was offended so expects everyone else to agree to it. Sad! The part of that post that I liked and always felt was, if someone says they are big people and awesome and all that the criticism of what they do by one person or a group of people should not affect them badly.

My experience with DishNetwork

So here is how my experience with DishNetwork customer care goes:
I call at 10 pm local time and a someone named Danielle takes my call.
I tell her that I have been charged extra for a technician visit. The technician had to visit as the new Dish they set up was not working and had been giving trouble for 1 month or so.She goes on to ask some related questions, puts me on hold and comes back and tells me we charge for technician visits, as you are under a subscription, we charge you a lesser fee. I go on to explain that I was not told that this charge was coming and that the customer care could not help me on the phone and they themselves offered to send in a technician to look at the problem. She again went on the whole loop of explaining the plan and the charges. I told her again that I was not told about this and the dish network connection was not working correctly, even after trouble shooting on the phone they could not resolve it, so its something they offered to help me with, so how is it fair to charge me?
From the dialogue that followed hence I understood that I had not paid any extra fees to get this subsidized price, so I should not be making this call about paying this amount. I was very frustrated at this, it is none of anyone's business to decide how much I can pay. I then told her,I am disappointed and that they should understand what I am telling, but she was more keen on explaining their side of the charges.Following which I went on a rant of how I feel that I should just not complain or what(I feel this is unfair blah blah) and then the phone went blank for a few minutes, I thought she hung up and so I said hello, after which she comes back, I ask her one final time if she can do something, all I got was a no.
I mean what kind ugly service was this, they are making it look as though I was asking for something wrong. I was asking them why would they charge to repair something that they had not set up correctly. If they could have troubleshooted on the phone then they could have right? They could not, and so they sent the technician in. They were giving me the idea that they are subsidizing the price for me for no extra cost and so I should not make a fuss. I am telling them, its not a problem of how much to pay, its about informing me before, not surprising me with an amount on my bill.
Well, after numerous phone calls and lots of technician visits the service is restored, but at the end of it, I am not sure if I will extend this contract or call their customer(don't)care again.

Blogging

Its been so long since I blogged that I had to click the " I forgot my password" link on Google today to get in here.

I have watched a lot of movies, gone to a lot of new places, made a trip back home and living in the cold corner of Florida, in these few months that I have not blogged.
Let me start with something interesting from last year before I go on cribbing about the new year and the new challenges.

I got a chance to go home again last year.
It was one of those trips that drag out of your routine and spins you, and puts you back. It was fun, the spin part, but then the going and coming back into schedule part was hard to digest. I had whole lot of fun and did not make any long trips this time. Spent a lot of time home and with my family and friends.

Then came the the trip to Universal Studios.
In December I went to Universal studios, finally! Yes I lived at close proximity to this place, but never gone there till now.It was simply beautiful, it was Christmas eve and the place looked very beautiful.

And then there was the new year.
It was a different kind of a new year celebration this year, I was in a theater watching Sherlock Holmes. It was fun, cause this was the never the way I had ever celebrated it.

With the new year came new resolutions, the very troubling resolutions.
One of them was at least one blog post per month. And here it is the one post per month's quota.

Let me find more interesting stuff to blog more often!

Earth Hour 2009

For all those who did not know that there is something called earth hour, read this before continuing to read this post.

As you would be knowing by now, the earth hour is an event to create awareness about how our planet is being mismanaged and plundered by us.Being a part of generation that has been seeing the constant changes in the global climate map, I feel more such events should be organized.

I am from the Chennai Metro, a metro known for one of the worst water scarcities in the summers. I was born and raised in Chennai and I personally have seen how over the years the summers got hotter and the water scarcity worse. When I was a kid, the corporation rationed water to us on hourly basis, but our wells still had water. Over the years, the wells started drying up, so we got water from the bore wells. Soon, the bores dried up too, so we had to buy water from tankers. Not to ask about the heat.It became unbearable in the late 90s, that we were forced to buy air-conditioning to all the bedrooms in our house.

Moving out of India, I moved to Florida, the sunshine state. The heat here is unbearable in summers and the winter had become too cold too. The sun here pierces your skin, you can actually feel your skin burning in the heat.

With so much changing and the weather reports showing 100 year worst temperatures, we need to wake up to the call and take measures to conserve our ecosystem and save our future generations from further problems.

Here are the pics from the earth hour 09..they are so beautiful

Home and Back

I was home a month ago. It is just like yesterday, I wake up in my little room to smell fresh sambar, hear crows kawing away to glory and the most wonderful thing of all watch my mom walk around the house calling out to me to wake up.Ah! pure bliss.

Here I am back in my second home, wake up into a cold silent morning. Do the morning duties, eat a lone breakfast of oatmeal and coffee, grab my bag and run to work.
Work all day, get back home. A dark silent home, start cooking for dinner, eat dinner chat with a couple of friends, thank the lord for giving me a day and go to sleep.

I am not sure if I am happy or sad, all I know is I miss home.I miss waking up my brother, driving my mom mad, irritating my friends and going out in the evenings everyday. Reflecting on it, life looks more filled with activities back home, every breath had an event following it....Miss u ppl :(

Loans, Water and Farmers

I have been reading the news for a couple of days now, I don't know why the loans to farmer, idea from the Indian govt. has attracted my attention so much.

I was just wondering on what the government is trying to do to these poor farmers. They are getting them the fish instead of helping them to fish.Hope you get it.One of the agendas of any government that comes to ruling in the center has been linking all the rivers of India. This idea of linking all the rivers is a hot topic till they come to power, after they come to power nobody even opens their mouth about this.
Hope you understand where I am going.

Let me now explain what I am thinking, the government is spending lots of money as loans to these poor farmers.Do they ever notice, why these farmers ever go into such a state of poverty. Most probably it would have been the failing monsoons or some crop disease. Its most likely the failing monsoon. While the northern parts of India is gifted with perennial rivers, the thirst of the south is quenched by the seasonal ones.So when the monsoon fails, the rivers too fail.If the rivers fail, the crops die and so do the farmers who are waiting to harvest them.

In order to make up for this loss of crops, what does the government do, give these farmers loans to live.Does the meager money it gives them help them get water for their lands?? Or does it help them keep alive till the next monsoon??
Why does the government never want to think of solving problems for the long run?

If they were to use the money they have borrowed from various sources to give these poor farmers, to link the rivers there will be no water scarcity in some places and floods in others.

But I guess this is all a part of the vote bank drive. If they solve this problem now, what will they write in their agenda for the next 5 years to solve, right. What will they have to promise, for the votes?

Its one of Those Days

Its one of the days, I feel least productive. Those days I want to run away from being me.Its those weird days I wish I never had to spend time being me.
I have not done even a single productive thing since morning today.I have simply not done anything except, think about what I am doing and why on earth am I doing what I am doing right now.
A simple enumeration of what all I did today makes me feel horrible.I had wasted a lot of precious time.Time something more precious than money.Phew!!
I went on to do the following things:

1. Create an account in a new website.
2. Watch some news on NDTV.com
3. Eat noodles, curse the bad taste of top ramen oriental flavor.
4. Try looking at my recently implemented project.
5. Check a lot of fotos.
6. Celebrate the birthday of my friends, virtually.
7. Take care that I trouble one of my friends well.
8. Eat a bowl of grapes :D

Does not look like a very good list of things to have done. But anyways spent a lot of time on friends :)...Life building exercise section u c.

Summers past

Sitting in my home on a hot summer afternoon filled me with memories of summers past.
The slant of the sun's rays reminded me of my summer holidays, made me travel back in time and filled me with the sweet memories of my childhood.

Summer holidays meant fun to me and a pain to my parents. They would not know what to do with extremely active kids bouncing off the walls at home.So for the first part of the holidays, they used to send me to some arts classes. The classes were carefully chosen after reviewing my reaction to each of their names. They would put me in the class whose very name made my face look bored and dull.Seriously, for a kid who loved running around a lot, sitting in a "pattu class" or "needle and thread" class was extreme boredom.
While I tried my best to convince them that dance class, karate class or any of such other classes were fun, they sent me to one of these horrendously boring classes. So after returning from such a boring class, I was bound to be quite and irritated with the hw they had given me there. So this is how the first 1.5 months of my holidays went by.Then came a stretch of month or so, this was the most painstakingly long time for my mom and fun time for me :D.She had to force me finish my holiday homeworks and also keep track of what all mischief I was up to.With a little brother following every step of yours, I know how difficult it is to keep my little blunders a secret.
So here I was with a little spy peeking at what ever I was doing from behind my back.
How I wished the little devil was more an angel!!So every holiday from my 2nd class till 6th class went about like this.
After 6th class life changed, myself my brother got bitten by the video games bug.So my parents were happy that the little pests were in a single room most of the time.Though we fought over the player chances and who is a better player and brought the roof down,we still were under the watchful eyes of my mom.At the end of 3 months of that particular holidays we had finished one full set of games and were waiting for more to come.
We used to play cricket, broke a couple of window panes in our own house.Got scolded for not being careful enough :).Then the long gardening sessions, of getting water from the tap near the well and pouring water to each of the plants with personal care for each of them.
We used to hold cycle races while delivering goods at my aunt's place and going out to get maggi for evening snack time :D.
Playing running and catching, getting flowers from the jasmine tree, playing hide and seek and of course going out and eating some crappy stuff at tiny chaat shops.

Recollecting these happy memories, I spent my evening wondering, may be I should have done more things in those days.I get to smile at them so will my parents, but I surely know they would have been so tired of keeping up with me then.
Thanks mom and dad for putting up with the little pest I was :D.

MARCHed

The month of March has always been very important in my life. Not just because the board exams are scheduled to happen this time of the year, its also because its the first month after I was born :D.
Many Significant things happened during various March in my life some sad, some happy and there were uneventful Marches too.
But the March of '08 is one of the most cherished ones in my life(March of '07 became one such March after some events that followed it).But coming back to March'08, I went back home after a long time. For a person who had never left home for more than 2 months an eight month stay outside ones homeland is a huge time.
I was back home for just 17 days, but filled all the days with as much things I could do in a day.I enjoyed a lot with my brother.I missed him the most in my life outside home, he was a lot of support and gave me lots of insane ideas.Even at the most diff situation his advice could bring smile to my lips.
I missed the sounds of the day in an average Chennai day.Simple things like the milk cooker whistling, the birds chirping, the vegetable vendor crying hoarse to sell vendakai, the cobbler calling out for torn slippers.I missed the mosquitoes, I missed the bumps on the road..I was missing everything that had been a part of my life in the city. Most of all I missed home, the smell of mom's cooking.
I took all of these things I missed and tried to take in all of them in one go.One March, a two week period, I lived the life meant for the next one year in India.
I would never agree that I had enuff of it, but still I made an attempt to get content with this trip.
It felt like time was flying, indeed March just marched past me.

This is a post to thank all my friends and my dear family for putting up with my
insanity.I miss all of u a lot.Spl thanks to those ppl who bunked work to go out with me ;)..I know I have taken a lot of your casual hols, hope u would agree it was all worth it :).

public Transport

I have been blogging for about 2 years now.So looking back I have blogged quite a lot about the day to day problems I got to face in India.Things that I felt were issues and problems for which I strongly sided. But after moving to the US, I found that the problems I am facing in everyday life are more at a personal level than in the surrounding.Yeah I guess thats why problems here are way too different than the problems in our cities.

A typical example would be traveling in a bus in my city in India, it was an experience unto itself.Getting the bus on time was a problem and it not being crowded was another. But still it was very well ventilated. So when ever you are in a typical public transport bus, unless you are inches away from the next person or some one is drunk, the place does not exactly feel nauseating. But here we have air-conditioned buses, I don't know why every possible way of getting fresh air into living spaces is stopped. But anyways,so here we are in a absolutely cold bus with sleepy faces sipping morning coffee or coke and most of them smelling of sleep(u know that muffled smells of sleeping).Hence as soon as u enter the bus the smell is over powering and you start feeling sleepy right in the morning.

You would think whats personal in this, well me feeling sleepy rt in the morning after all the bathing, coffee drinking and breakfast eating is not a good thing to happen.

By this post, I don't glorify public transport in my city, its just a random comparison of simple joy of breathing fresh air, with lot of dust, automobile fumes, random chicken shop egg curry smell and may be a drunken fella in the bus and extremely comfortable looking, sealed from any weather and boring mode of transport.

Lost

Yeah I have been to Lost in thoughts these days.At any given point of time I simply keep thinking about something or the other. Its not that no one does it, but I am this no care person who keeps observing my environment all the time, but today I sit here and not look too much around. As soon as I am to myself I quit observing around and drown in my own imaginary world of thoughts and arguments.

I was not this kind of person before. But too much into this weird kind of thinking about something all the time, is not keeping me cool.So those who are reading my blog can u tell me what to do about this, have you ever been so much into thinking aka worried?

Merry Christmas

Its christmas once again..the time of the year when sharing and giving are ways to express one's love to fellow beings.
Sitting in one corner of a bedroom I have nothing to do but to trace back to the most eventful christmas eve and christmas nights of my life.I have not had many eventful ones so just a few to recall..and amongst them I enjoyed the christmas of 2006 the most.

The Angel of Christmas recent Past :D
----------------------------------------
I was in Pune last christmas..one of my friends Miss.E was missing home a lot and wanted to go back for a christmas dinner. We all wished we could do something to help her.So the gang got together and planned a cool suprise christmas night party for her.We collected enuff funds, and made up nice stories to make it a suprise for her.We went to the christmas sale in the biggest malls in Pune and looked for gifts for our chris kids.In the process made miss E to choose her gift without her realising it.
Then one of my friends, according to the plan, made up a story of a bad mood due to a fight with his girl friend. So he said he wanted to go to a movie, he said he wanted miss E to go with him to the movie so we could have some fun.I had a hell of a time faking the whole thing. So finally we went to "Bhagam Bhag"..not a very impressive movie, but for a movie we had to watch only till the interval it was good enuff. So after the interval we got the call from the rest of the gang that the party floor was ready.
Now my other friend said we need to rush back home as some other friend of ours was very sick.So we went back half way thru the movie.Miss E was lil upset abt the whole thingy...as she was not home..no christmas dinner...no church mass...now one friend had fought with his gf and another was sick.
But on getting back home when we all wished her merry christmas and served her christmas dinner she was in tears...We were so happy to have made someone's christmas day tat time.As for the gifts..she was so happy to get the things she loved.

Its true that in there is more fun in giving than in receiving.
Wish u all a merry christmas...Missing home a lot now :(.

Destination LA

It was 7.45 in the morning..I woke up from a night mare, a bad one at it.Looking around the room, I find all my things scattered on my side of the room and on the other side of the room we see my roomie completely wrapped up in 2 blankets..yeah it is a cold day.I was not able to go to sleep again, so I walk to brush my teeth, I open the tap and out flows very cold water and my hands instantly freeze...wow who said Florida is the sunshine state.I was going to leave to LA by the evening flight and all my clothes were unwashed and dirty. So I run to the launder-o-mat, the first thing after my coffee.
The flight was scheduled at 5.05 in the evening.I had not decided how to get to the airport still.I knew I can't take a bus from downtown..I don't know the very thought of getting there gives me chills. So I decide to take a taxi.I call up some local taxi guy..ask him to send the at 3.Now I find a more interesting problem, I have too less money to pay my taxi.
Life is no fun without a troubles rt..so here I had a lot of things to trouble me..I need to make my lunch and dinner(domestic flights within US starve ppl), I had to pack a couple of dresses and finally yeh finally I need a minimum of 40$ to get to the LA airport. So I went to the bus stop looking for a bus to go to an ATM alas, murphy's law was working so perfectly, there were no buses now..damn, I stood there for 20 mins all in vain..I turn around walk into my apartment complex..swish there goes a bus!!! I love my LUCK :)
So here I go thinking and thinking about how I am going to pay my taxi? Finally I hit reality..yes I could easily take the route to the airport via the neat ATM :D.
Wow!!
So finally I reached the airport via an ATM rich route..so I paid my taxi and also reached to the airport on time.I sit and read a stupid good for nothing book...seriously I felt bad about my judgement skills to get a good book!.So here I am travelling all alone with a very boring book all the way to LA.

I am sure its gonna be a great boring trip, a trip I am seriously gonna get bored every second.Except for getting to LA, I was not interested in anything in the trip.

So I got to Atlanta next, the intermediate stop.I walked all over the airport and found the gate I had to take my flight from.I sat close to it and started thinking how the next two hrs was going to be.After sometime I got up to find a coffee shop.
Not that I was sleepy, but i was very thirsty, in a country were pure water was as costly as coffee, I decided to take coffee instead.I asked for a small cup of coffee and like I have already mentioned I got so much coffee, as much I should have had in the whole day. After pouring down a considerable amount in transit to my seat I drank up the coffee and started watching the tv in the terminal.Well the news was even more stupid to watch. So I kept looking at the ppl around, quite an entertainment.

Finally after a completely boring 5 and half hour flight, sitting near the window, totally immobile all the time I reached LA.I did not even sleep for 2 mins, the guy sitting next to me and the old lady next to him were snoring away to glory.I was wondering how ppl made it to wonderland in such restricted spaces, my legs were in extremely painful position and I was so thankful to reach LA..phew, long journey believe me..too long...Looks like I am growing old ;).

Its been four full months of toiling, sweating...frustrating project ends, terrible homework and nightmares called midterms and end terms. It all got over today..yes exactly 45 mins ago I put down my pencil after writing my last exam of this semester.
I felt horrible cos the questions were puzzling, but the other side of heart said..."Its all over for the next 15 days".
Yeah the next semester starts in 15 days..I now know what is to be done, to work, to look for the right things, to look at myself at the most depressing moment and smile and say..its ok you did ur best.
The last time in life I had been in such terrible place was when I was working for my board exams in the 12th class. Here I am again , pushing my limits everyday and hoping I will be fine with every step.
There were sooper low days, which made me look like a stranger to me.There were hyper days, when things were magically right. But there was not a day I did not miss the other person I was..She who was there a year ago.The girl I loved a lot..I lost her somewhere in this year long journey to "I DONO WHAT"...
I miss everything that was in my life.

whY ME?

Many times in life I have sat down thinking why me god?

"Am I the one you chose to love or the one you hate to love,
or the one you never want to cease to learn."

I am terribly dazed by the ways of life..no two days, since I started my masters, have I slept with the same feeling.Today is yet another sulking saturday.I feel like screaming at god..NOW THIS!!WHAT OTHER PLANS HAVE YOU GOT FOR ME? IF trouble is all that you can give me...why don't you go a step further and kill me?
I know god might be thinking, well u never asked "why me?", when all the happiness of the world was at my feet...Well I never asked him "Why me", but I sure thanked him everyday for the life he had blessed me with.

A stitch in the soul, a constant rub to keep the wounds fresh. On top of this someone rubs salt on the open wound and asks me "do you feel ok now?".

Toiling on tuesdays

Yeah u read the heading right..tuesdays are the days I fear the most they are the days I have to wake up as early as 6.30am(well this is early considering I sleep at 1 or 2am).OK let me continue...on Tuesdays i have 6 hrs of classes in sub zero temperatures.

Enga class la A/C temperature yevaen set pannurannu theriyala...yabba..it feels like antartica all around the week. Its so damn cold in the class that I wear a sweater to class.

To add to the misery of the cold air and extreme lighting...I get feel hungry immediately after the class starts..at the end of 50 mins I hear growls of my stomach. But I will have to attend the next class in next ten minutes...So I sit there hoping no one heard my stomach :(

As the day proceeds..I become dull and bored, not that I look any better in the morning. It simply that I look worse. Then I get back home as soon as possible so that I can gulp down a hot mug of coffee...its then I wake up since morning.

Now I am pretty used to this kind of life...It was worst day in the beginning of the semester...I still remember the first tuesday of the semester, I came back home so exhausted tat I called up my brother and told how horrible the day was I did not speak for the rest day...I slept late into the next day...

But then I learnt one useful lesson from my brother, if over work..u should party equally as it will help rejuvenate us...So I rewarded myself with a movie the next day.

Tuesdays still remain the toughest days..but atleast I have a longer week end compared to all my roomies :).
